I noticed that on the table is a photograph containing three people. I assume that it's this man and child (though younger) and the man's wife, whom is absent in the main photo. She must have passed ...

boatswain:
Krekeltje, there is no option to resize images during the opload process. You have to resize them yourselfs. You could use Paint which is a standard programm in Windows. An other option is to send them to me by email and I will resize and upload them for you. My email is on the left where is says Email in yellow, just click it.
krekeltje:

boatswain:
krekeltje, thanks for the new images. However 2 pictures called 'hospital bed' and 'in coffin' are both the same. I added the hospital bed. Could you upload the correct 'in coffin' ? Also, one you uploaded was already in the update from yesterday.

@dollyslaffn: Found it and removed the link! It's a shame that a domain about the subject is taken by a XXX site :( I updated the discription on Jessica's detail page with a link to a Facebook memorial page created by her mother. It contains a lot of pictures of Jessica and newspaper clips about the murder, including pictures of the murderer. Thanks for letting me know.
boatswain:
@jaye anne:Thanks, glad you found us and welcome to the site!
dollyslaffn:
Boatswain, you have a link posted in the comments under the picture of a little girl who was stabbed with a screwdriver in Modern post Mortem Photography. When I clicked on it , it took me to a **** site.(I clicked it twice with the same results). I have no doubt you would not want it there, if you knew.It is supposed to be a picture of the little girl's killer....
jaye anne:
I've been looking for a great site about post mortem, this is really a great help :)
japonaliya:
Just a thought..I am always wondering where the images (except my own of course) originate from. i.e. members collection, random internet search, eBay, antique photo for sale websites. etc.
One reason is just curiosity, the other is if i like a particular image, i might want to know if it is available for sale or not.
So..can we have an informal request of provenance of any posted image where possible, esp. member uploads?
omotn61:
I was just thinking, If you were a fisherman, people would be wanting to know where your fishing hole was. You get so many great pictures and have such a great collection. Kinda makes me proud to almost know you.
boatswain:
@omotn61: Yes, I save them till I have several to post.
omotn61:
thanks, Boatswain, these were very nice. I wonder, do you get these in lots or save them until you have several to post?
OtisRNeedleman:

Post-Mortem-"Who Are These Brothers?" The photos show burial at Inglewood Cemetery-Lake of memories Section-my guess is sometime between 1958 and 1960. Is there anyone who lives near LAX who can check the site?

boatswain:
Happy Valentine to all!
OtisRNeedleman:
Happy Valentine's Day to everyone!
omotn61:
Yes,Boatswain, I got it, that was a poor attempt at humor. What I really meant to convey is that it's sad that other people deem our friends as less important when they've never met them, and know nothing of their lives. So the man wasn't Norman Swartzkoff , or Colin Powell, doesn't mean they could'nt waste a little lead on him for the family.
boatswain:
@omotn61: Please don't get me wrong, ofcourse he was important and love by his family. I ment he didn't get media attention otherwise he would have gotten the complete ceremonie, I guess.
omotn61:
I could've gone without thinking about that, Boatswain. It's hard to think of someone you care for not being important. But it was probably accurate. In my eyes, this was a great man, a good father, a pillar of his church, and a good friend to all.
OtisRNeedleman:
Boatswain, thanks for all the new pics! omotn, sorry to hear about the funeral. Yes, there should have been a gun salute. Might be worth complaining to your Congressman about.
boatswain:
Febr.8: New pm images added.
boatswain:
@omotn61: I get the feeling he wasn't important enough...just another marine or soldier. Totaly unacceptable in my opinion. Taking pictures is more a choice of the family. Maybe they took pictures at the funeral home?
omotn61:
I just thought I'd mention, I attended a military funeral two days ago. I noticed that no one took pictures. I think it is a fad that's gone out of style. We were a bit confused. He was a Marine, but the army did the service, and there was no gun salute, which everyone says is customary. I also thought the folding of his flag was shoddy, uneven, and unacceptable for such a solemn occasion.
omotn61:
thank you for the new pictures, Boatswain, it looks like you got some nice ones. The ones with the babies are so sad, but each of them was someone's dear child. I hope they all found peace.
boatswain:
@japonaliya. It's added and will have a look.
japonaliya:
Oh, Boatswain...got OK from seller hailhail2 to post for comments...I know him and have an e-mail permission since the photo does have a watermark. (PM ..or not? Member uploads 1/21
omotn61:
It's not a PM and it's an adult, so It isn't appropriate here, but when I get time, I'll do one of these photos and post it, hopefully one of the live children shots.
boatswain:
@omotn61: You make me curious :)
omotn61:
Every year our newspaper posts old photos of our citiy's past generations. Today was the day it came out. I did a sketch of a lady from the late 1800's. I like it pretty well.
boatswain:
@omotn61: Thanks for explaining. I will post new images soon.
boatswain:
@CAMFDRN:
Yes there is! Scroll down on the detailpage of a picture and you see a previous and next option.
CAMFDRN:
is there any way to move easily from picture to picture, e.g. right left arrows on keyboard?
omotn61:
Oh yeah, I'm someone who revisits things quite often. I study the details and hence my many comments. I think it's the artist's eye that draws me to return. I'm trying to get the courage up to pick out one to sketch and post. The problem is that it would be revealing more of myself than I'm comfortable with at the moment. I'm not very good at showing who and what I am.
boatswain:
@nikkijb78: Welcome to our site! I will send you a mail as soon a forum account has been created for you.

@omotn61: Must be the difference in graphic card and monitor that makes them look more colorful :) I'm realy glad you like them so much to go for a second round...
nikkijb78:
Thanks omotn61! I'm sure I will since I'm a huge history lover and I love anything related to history.
omotn61:
Boatswain, I was re examining the children cased photos in the antique photos. I don't remember them being so colorful and vivid when first I saw them. Did you enhance them, or was I not very observent the first goround? The first time I noticed, I was on another computer and now its very nice on mine as well. Either way, they look good.
omotn61:
Sorry, I meant Nikijb 78. Not wearing my eyeballs.
omotn61:
Hello, Nikijb28! Greetings from an inmate! Hope you enjoy it here as much as I do! Welcome!

Hello,Otis,thank for your words,
Hope and illusion never have to lose, but I have explained to Omot61 the situation in my country.
OtisRNeedleman:
Omotn's right....we're all going through challenging times, just different things for different people. But as long as you never give up, you can succeed.
omotn61:
Nuria, I hope not, but then, it usually is everywhere. A part of life that never misses anyone. Happy New Year to All.

When correct, you and all members can edit and/or delete their own comments. Thanks for the compliments and I'm glad to hear you like our site :)
Billy Bob:
Thank you Mr. Boatswain again for your help. I don't like to be sloppy with postings I make so I edit them and felt chagrinned to have had to ask for your help to remove spurious over-posts. I enjoy commenting on so many astounding photos as you have already surmised, I'm sure! I am pleased to have found your unique site and it all seems so very well done & well managed thus, my enthusiasm. Thank you. James
OtisRNeedleman:
I, too, am sorry about what happened in Connecticut, but the vast majority of gun owners are law-abiding citizens and their Second Amendment rights cannot be infringed.
nuria:
My tears are for these children and teachers and their families.
Mr.Obama would have to prohibit anyone buying a gun easily
nuria:
lo que ha pasado en Connecticut me hace llorar, pobres niños! pobres padres y maestros!el Sr Obama tendria que poner ley a todo esto,es muy peligroso el que cualquiera pueda tener armas!
boatswain:
My thoughts are with all the families who lost a child or loved one today in the Connecticut school shooting. My heart is crying....those poor babies..
boatswain:
Hi Billy Bob, your double post is deleted and I changed the settings so, if correct, you can delete your comments by yourself now.

Oh, very nice. Thank you Boatswain!
boatswain:
Hello Billy Bob, both comments have been deleted.
Billy Bob:
I was editing my comment on 041 (which is in my lightbox) and ended up with 2 comments instead. Hoping to have help removing both & I can leave a short comment later. Thanks to you boatswain. I don't know how else to bring attention to it & I wasn't able to sign into the forum just now. Thanks.
omotn61:
Yes, I agree, BillyBob, There are many who choose to look at the holidays in that way. Thankfully, in the Bible belt, we still have quite a few who still look at this as a spiritual time, and a time of good will to others.
Billy Bob:
Yes but "Thanksgiving" holi-day is for certain customary foods, feasting & family gathering and the start of an intensive shopping season for some but not for others!
Ebbas_angel:
I haven't been on here enough lately... Glad to be back! I love this site!!!
omotn61:
I've been looking at my comments. I know I'm long winded and a know-it-all. I hope I'm not boring people. My dad was a preacher, so I come by it naturally.
omotn61:
You know, I still haven't realized that not all of you are here in my homeland. Still, I guess the sentiment is close to how you feel when someone says Happy Christmas, Joueux Noel, Feliiz Navidad etc, Here, we use thanksgiving as a start to our holy season, so in extension, may you all have a blessed holiday season now and as it approaches.
boatswain:
@omotn61: We don't celebrate it here in Europe but thanks anyway. I hope you had a great day!
omotn61:

I have another question. How exactly do I upload an image? I keep getting an error message. I pulled an image off of ebay a couple weeks ago and it is just about the strangest one I've ever seen. I wanted to share it with all of you here. I have the image saved on my kindle fire.
trichmond78:
I have been searching for a PM pic that I seen on here, I cannot find it and wanted to show it to my sister. It was of a small boy that was holding kites, it looked like a staged photo, like it may have been done in a studio. If anyone could help me find it I would appreciate it!
cmcronin:
Thanks Boatswain! I've been wanting to get on the forum too!

Erthy:
Hello all-I'm new here and have been enjoying all the wonderful photos! I am a Civil War reenactor and these give me not only ideas for the clothes I sew for reenactment, but also a sense of what life was like in that era. I am also fascinated with the postmortem photos. The more I look at them, the more I understand the sentiment behind them. At first I found them un-nerving, but now I see them as oddly beautiful and very compelling. I'm glad I found this site and hope to get to know you all better!
OtisRNeedleman:
You're welcome. Just sorry they show up.

@Otis, good to hear, it's much faster for me too now. I think the problem was the random images which is logical because with every page load it has to render a new image out of thousands.
OtisRNeedleman:
Boatswain, image pages load MUCH quicker now. Got here on the first try today. Thanks again! :)
boatswain:
Sept.6 New images added. Need to group some images to one detail page but will do that later. Bed time here!

boatswain:
Joy3015 has send us 6 more newspaper articles about Guy Anderson
she received from Elwood Library!
It's most heartbreaking to read about the post mortem examination.
Now we have a more complete picture about what happened to Guy.
Thanks so much for all the contributions!
joy3015:
@Boatswain- May I please have your email address? The librarian in Madison, Indiana, sent me six INTERESTING articles about Guy Anderson's death and I'd like to forward them to you. You can send you address to joy3015@hotmail.com.

I haven't seen David either and hope he will show up again soon.
omotn61:
Thank you Boatswain, I particularly liked these new photos, especially the miner/logger pic.
joy3015:
Has anyone heard from our friends, AMR, David? I hope he is okay.
omotn61:
Yes, Boatswain, I'm having trouble connecting to the main family line because the whites did not want to include info on non-whites, and the non-whites tried to hide thier heritage.
boatswain:
omotn61, cool! It's always exciting to do research and find out about your ancestors. I only wish we had more free acces to all those records.
omotn61:
Guys, I've been doing work on my family tree, and it's fascinating! Seen a lot of grave photos and learned so much!. We knew we had Indian ancestors, but now know that we're of Mellungeon descent. Some might not like that, But I think It's cool.
ladyj1977:
thank you

Thank you Otis!

omotn61:
Yes, Boatswain, thank you very much. I foundthe name by looking up PM images on aol. Then I tracked it until I dug up the story in several articles. The story was weird and very interesting. Poor family!
boatswain:
@omotn61, There where some messages here for Linda B but I deleted them because she can login now. About the murdered Parson family, you can find a huge scan here http://www.photoeye.com/BookteaseLight/bookteaseenlarge.cfm?catalog=PY263&image=1
and the story here http://thechaosofdeath.blogspot.nl/2008/03/jodie-hamilton-and-mourning-photography.html
omotn61:
I've been looking for the picture of the whole family, mom, dad, and 3 little boys shot in the head and laid out on the bed together. I thought it was on here.Anyone know where they are, and their story?
omotn61:
what's wrong with the messages and timing? I've seen some messages come up and last a day and then it skips back to ones from about a week before.
boatswain:
Got rid of it Otis as long as it lasts!
Thanks!
OtisRNeedleman:
The spammers are back! Amazing..how low will they go?

June 2: Just posted some new pm's
omotn61:
OtisRneedleman: I think I have seen all these so far at least once. I am interested in all old photos. It was a family passtime for us to go over the old albums and I remember the old funeral pictures well. I really have learned a lot about deaths back then from you. Good day!
OtisRNeedleman:
@omotn61 - Thanks for the kind words. Have been looking at PMs for over twenty years. This is a great place to learn about PMs. Try to look at all of them. Takes time but well worth it.
omotn61:
OtisRNeedlman: Oh wow! I hope you are doing well. I enjoy your very informative comments. You sound like you are well versed in the PMs that you talk about. good day!
OtisRNeedleman:
The spammers are back again. Just amazing.
OtisRNeedleman:
@omotn61 - Thanks! Had open-heart surgery on May 7, got home May 11. Making progress. Have a great day!

boatswain:
@Bethklim85: Send you a mail
Bethklim85:
Hey all!! I have a few questions that I wonder if anyone knows the answers to as I am puzzled ( may be dumb questions lol). 1 Are stereoviews real photos? Say if i found a Pm stereoview would it most likely be staged with alive people posing as deceased?Other question, I have seen quite a few photos with an x or cross over a person or a few people in the picture.Does that mean they passed? Thanks for any answers!
boatswain:
@omotn61:
Thank you! I'm glad to see that they get more attention now :)
omotn61:
Boatswain, I just love the new galleries! thanks for adding them. I have found I love all old photos, not just PMs. The live ones add a taste of hope that the subjects lived long and happy lives.

Happy Easter!!
omotn61:
They added fake injuries to these children, and sold them for entertainment. I found it repulsive
boatswain:
@omotn61
After a little search I think I found the scene you are refering to in a game walkthrough. You can see at least 3 post mortem pictures used there!
Very tasteless to use these images for games!
http://tinyurl.com/dy9zexj

thanks for letting us know.
omotn61:
I have a new video game called escape from Ravenhearst. In one particular scene, they used post mortems of children that I know I've seen here as props for the game. I don't think it's anything connected with the site, but I think it's in extremely bad taste to put real pms on a video game.
honeybeeisme:
Boatswain, thank you SOOO much for all the new and lovely photos! Thank you so much for this wonderful site and your thoughfullness in putting it all together.
OtisRNeedleman:
Boatswain, who WOULDN'T like the site? You do a great job!

boatswain:
New images added today
boatswain:
OtisRNeedleman and honeybeeisme:
Thanks!
Yes, it's a spammer who used a valid email adress.
Imagine, spammers who spend their working days searching for sites where they can inject trash and filth, no matter what the site is about.
I've even seen it in guestbooks of online memorial sites. How can they live with it ! Believe, lots of forums, comment boxes and guestbooks are closed because of it :( It's only getting worse...
OtisRNeedleman:
Got another spammer, boatswain.
honeybeeisme:
Boatswain, there seems to be something very odd in the comments section for latest member up-load. It some weird type of add or something. Just thought I'd let you know! Thanks for everything you do!!!

joy3015:
There is a photo of an elderly man being held in a standing position by his loved ones. Can anyone remember where it is? Thanks in advance!
OtisRNeedleman:
Glad to help. No morals, they just care about money.
boatswain:
@Otis
It was just a question of time. Geezz these people have no moral. I had to close to forum from registration because I had about 15 to 20 spam registrations a day.
Thanks for the notice :)
OtisRNeedleman:
Boatswain, got a spammer here..mstar.
japonaliya:
I did have some questions, and was not clearly convinced that the man was post mortem, but the off center vacant stare, and the weirdly placed hands, gave me a pause. however, I don't see any discoloration or swelling to the hands which would more than likely be present if PM, but it IS a strange photo..
japonaliya:
Wow! Is that an attempt to vignette, or is it actually some defect in the surface of the emulsion?
japonaliya:
Wow! Is that an attempt to vignette, or is it actually some defect in the surface of the emulsion?
boatswain:
@japonaliya
See the links below and look at the edges. They are all postcards.

http://www.antiquephotoalbum.nl/pictures/pc1.jpg

http://www.antiquephotoalbum.nl/pictures/pc2.jpg

http://www.antiquephotoalbum.nl/pictures/pc3.jpg

.
boatswain:
@japonaliya:
If it was a pm it would have been sold for that price right a way. I can't recall ever seen a pm like that before.
japonaliya:
Hmm, never saw that kind of effect before..
Not a PM? Wow, I was pretty sure..the man's hand look really weirdly posed, and he has a vacant stare while his wife and son don't. But I'll defer to your expertise..
boatswain:
@japonaliya:
I have a couple of postcards that show exactly the same effects on the edges.
It's not a tintype and most important it's not a pm either.
Probably a postcard (around the 1930's) worth just a couple of dollars.
japonaliya:
Ebay current item: 130592669226
Victorian dead father with wife and son.
Almost no Q that the father is dead, but seller shows discolored edges most likely tintype, but never says "tintype" which leads me to think recent copy print. Price too cheap for an original though seller claims so..Also, seem to have seen before, but can't remember where.
Has anyone seen this before?
Is the vignetting consistent with a paper print (darkroom) or do you think it is a copy print from a hard image?
boatswain:
@krekeltje, first of all it was not a mother who killed her children but it's a warcrime/genocide. The picture was not that clear but after brighten it and having a good look it shows several children hanged on a tree. Hopefully you understand if I accept this photo more will follow and they are not the post mortem memorial and related photos these albums are meant for.
krekeltje:
@boatswain, i want an explanation why the picture is removed, only because a member does not agree that it is a socalled rememberance picture. i thought that on the member uploads pages any death and rememberance issues are permitted. i am confussed, please explane to me. thanks.
OtisRNeedleman:
Thanks for all the new pictures!
boatswain:

Took us 2 days to check everything and remove all the malware that was injected to the site. We asked google for a re-check and the site is safe again!
Still haven't a clue how it got here but making the site clean again was our priority. We took extra safety precautions.
OtisRNeedleman:
Krekeltje, thanks for the Swedish link! Very interesting. I don't know Swedish but there are enough cognates to understand what's going on.
OtisRNeedleman:
I use IE9. No problems here. Re Thanatos, what goes around most assuredly comes around. Guess the boy is jealous.
japonaliya:
Glad I was able to inform you using IE.
I am sure Thantos has something to do with this.....
I hope "Mikey" soon ends up here as a post mortem....
boatswain:
japonaliya: I was shocked too seeing that message. There's nothing installed or added to this site by me that could be marked as spyware and it's not found by google either. We will go to the bottom of this. The status for this site is that in the last 90 days it's reported once !
japonaliya:
ATTACK SITE WARNING!!!
Google/Firefox will not let me ente this site!! Had to use IE.
PLEASE find out what is going on.
Did THANTOS have anything to do with this?
If so, lets make Mr Thantos into a post-mortem!
krekeltje:

Have been working on the new layout for about a week including adding all the extra modifications like: all comments left by members, more images on detail page, shoutbox, prev. and next images, etc.
They are not standard in the default template which I used to create this one.
sarahcat33:
I love your new background, and I love this site!!
boatswain:
Thanks curio, I'm glad you like it.
curio:
thank you boatswain. yours is a wonderful site. i had thought you had removed the fore/next pic feature and was disappointed. i have noticed you fix things very swiftly. well done of course
boatswain:
@curio:
It's fixed now
curio:

Dear boatswain, Not sure this is the proper place to ask, but I would like to create an account in the forums. Your site is truly wonderful, amazing, and beautiful. If you would create an account for me that would be wonderful.

Thank you, honeybeeisme

New images in the first 4 categories
AMR191908:
Looking pics for our forum, I find many interesting images of mummies, skeletons, exhumations, etc. that cannot show oneself without warning on the hardness of the images.
I exclude from these pics the images "gore", that I detest.

I propose the creation of a new section of our forum: " Warning ".

Regards: David.
boatswain:
There is a new category named 'Death in Art' with paintings, sketches etc. all with the subject death.

Haven't seen on amazon yet, but it IS on eBay USA one just sold...
It says seller will ship within 2 days of receiving cleared payment.
However, the prices vary from listing to listing, and thought the seller is Burns, he prices the book higher than his website in some!!
boatswain:
We have ordered a copy through the site but haven't received it yet.
OtisRNeedleman:
Amazon has Sleeping Beauty 3 on their site, but no price listed. Have put book on my Amazon wish list whenever Amazon starts selling it. Think that will happen soon...Dr. Burns could sell a ton of books that way.
japonaliya:
I too have seen used copies and marketplace copies on Amazon, but not directly through Amazon, nut there were fairly expensive. Burns Press sells new for $85. never saw it cheaper...
boatswain:
@marydoll:
On the main page, below the menu you can see a player. You can start the music there.
marydoll:
wheres the music gone????
OtisRNeedleman:
Japonaliya, good question. Funny, I got Sleeping Beauty II from Amazon. Also agree that's a mighty small book for the subject matter.
japonaliya:
Sleeping Beauty III has not been released yet. according to the Burns Press, it is due late November 2010. Amazon doesn't carry Burns Press releases except used copies when the go OOP. It seems the only place you can get it is from the BP website.
Also, though it is supposed to be HC, the reason it is so cheap is that it is tiny...6X6.25 inches.
I wonder how they can fit 130 photos plus text in a 140 pp book of such a small size?
boatswain:
Thanks ladymaggie :)
ladymaggie1776:
As always,incredible pics boatswain!
OtisRNeedleman:
Whoa..just checked Amazon. They don't have the book yet.

@sdavenport1981:
Not every body was embalmed. The funeral usualy took place within 3 days and sometimes bodies were kept op ice.
Here's an article about embalming:
